I am sure that you, like me are struggling to get to grips with the implications of the change of government on the informatics agenda. I have decided to leave the NHS environment and set up a company dedicated to assisting others in maximising patient safety, whether they are private or NHS organisations.

Two things are becoming clear:

• Firstly it is likely that in the near future clinical information systems will be viewed as medical devices, and
• Secondly that the onus of proof of safety will shift from the supplier and installer to the organisation which uses them.

Certainly the NHS is unlikely to have the knowledge and the resource available to do this in the near term. I am pleased to say that we have first class expertise available, including clinicians and safety engineers who have first hand experience of successfully delivering safety help to both trusts and system suppliers.
